Convertible mittens

For the past few months, I’ve been trying not to add to my stash. Which actually hasn’t been too hard! (Although I’m sure my break from knitting made this easier…)

Then I bought a skein of yarn in mid-December. It was for immediate use, though, so my stash level didn’t change. I bought the yarn for two reasons. One is that I found a few weak spots in my seed stitch rib socks. Of course, I had the leftovers from every project except that one, and all of my other yarn was too fine or too heavy. Also, almost everything was completely the wrong color.

The other reason? I wanted convertible mittens.

(Not exactly true to color, at least on my work monitor – the color is a bit more subdued in person. I may try tweaking the photos a bit to fix this…)

Yarn:
Lorna’s Laces Swirl DK in Aqua

Needles:
US0 / 2.0mm Inox DPNs for cuff
US2 / 2.5mm Inox DPNs for hand, fingers, and mitten flap

I didn’t really use an existing pattern for this. Though thanks to the “Progressive Gloves” and “Thumb Gussets” articles from Interweave Knits Winter 2003, it was easy to come up with the glove portion.

Also, asymmetric gussets make me happy.

Actually, these mittens in general make me happy, even though the thumbs are a little large. My hands get cold pretty easily, and these will be especially perfect at, say, 6:30 AM on a rainy day.

These mittens are also the most functional hand coverings in my possession. I still use my Endpaper Mitts a lot, but they’re not as warm as my Anemoi Mittens. Which are not as useful as the Endpaper Mitts, since my fingers are confined. As for the fingertip-less gloves I made a few years back, I’ve since lost them, so they’re obviously not very helpful now.

So these mittens? Best of all worlds.

January 2009 goals

Knitting-wise, 2008 didn’t end on the best note for me. Because even though I could have achieved all my knitting goals, I totally failed:

  1. Complete at least five repeats of the Mountain Peaks Shawl edging – Not done.
  2. Complete at least three repeats of the Cleopatra Wrap – Not done.
  3. Finish Tubey – Not done.
  4. Finish at least one pair of socks – Not done.

I have no real excuse; all I can say is “um, oops?” But new year, new month… and new goals!

  1. Complete at least three repeats of the Mountain Peaks Shawl edging
  2. Complete at least two inches of Tubey
  3. Start and finish at least one convertible mitten for Mom
  4. Finish Cleopatra Wrap
  5. Finish at least one pair of socks

Wish me luck!

Toasty toes

Hey, look, sock toes!

To the left, we have a Mock Wave Cable Sock. To the right, we have the (finally!) revived Fairways sock.

I don’t have much to say about the former, except that I’m tired of purlwise M1s. But the latter’s another story. You can totally tell I hadn’t worked on it in ages – my colorwork’s all wonky. (Should block out, though. I hope!) Also, I don’t particularly love the toe, but then again I don’t hate it, either. So I think I’ll just leave it.

And finally, it’s pretty high on the list of “things I will never do again.” Well, okay, it’s not quite there yet. I’ll probably knit the second one at some point, after all! But then it’ll go on the list! Believe me when I say that my next colorwork socks will be much simpler.

December 2008 goals

I’m kind of amazed by how much I knit last month. Although it’s not really obvious from my goals:

  1. Complete at least four repeats of the Mountain Peaks Shawl edging – Done!
  2. Knit at least three inches for Tubey – Done!
  3. Knit the toe for the first Fairways sock – Done! (Will post a picture soon to prove it!)

I achieved all my goals and made progress on my other WIPs, too! Yay!

And now, time for new goals:

  1. Complete at least five repeats of the Mountain Peaks Shawl edging
  2. Complete at least three repeats of the Cleopatra Wrap
  3. Finish Tubey
  4. Finish at least one pair of socks

These are definitely doable. The question is, will I actually manage?

Finally, something new

If you’re reading this post, it means that my webhosting switch was successful. Yay!

Also, this update isn’t knitting-free. Because I have a new WIP to share!

I wouldn’t let myself start any new socks until I finished both the Sharks socks and the Retro Ribs. So needless to say, I cast on for this as soon as I wove in the Retro Ribs ends.

Doesn’t look very impressive, does it? But it’ll be more interesting when worn.

These are Mock Wave Cable Socks. They’re easy, but they take slightly more attention than hockey knitting should. So progress may be a little slow. But we’ll see how it goes.
