Charting

My next lace project is the Forest Path Stole from IK Summer 2003.

The charts, unfortunately, are a tad squint-worthy. And I like highlighting charts as I work on them, and I wasn’t about to do that in the magazine. Especially not when I have an average of 22 repeats for each chart (taking into account my adjustments for size).

So I ended up redoing the charts on my computer. I don’t have a knitting font or anything, and I don’t even have Excel on the computer I used for the charting (why I decided to use that computer for this is a mystery to me), so it took a little bit of time with a graphics program.

“Why didn’t you just scan it?” you may ask. Simple: the effort it would’ve taken to scan the whole page, clean it up, crop the charts out and resize them legibly is probably equal to the effort it took to recreate them. Really, it wasn’t all that hard for me.

It’s awesome, because now I can print up a page for each tier. Which is helpful because the chart you start with changes with each new tier, and all charts have rows you only need to work on odd- or even-numbered tiers. And I can highlight! I don’t know how dependent I’ll still be on the charts by, say, tier five, but it’s nice to have the option to print multiple copies.

September 2005 goals

Taking a cue from both Kris and Jess, I’m going to try posting monthly goals. The last time I posted goals, I managed to achieve them, so I want to see if that was a fluke or if I really am more goal-oriented now.

Goals for this month:

  1. Complete at least the yoke for Eris
  2. Finish tipless gloves
  3. Finish Shimmer
  4. Re-start (yet again) Lotus Blossom and complete at least one chart
  5. Hold off on pipeline projects until completing at least one WIP
  6. Draft a pattern for toe socks
  7. Work only with stash yarn

Now let’s see how realistic these goals are…

Manos, the hanks of fate

(If any of you get the reference in the title of this post, I won’t know whether to reward you, pity you, or pretend I don’t even know you. :-P)

I swung by the Nest about a week ago. Up until that point, I’d been pretty good about not purchasing yarn without a project in mind. But then my eye was drawn to some turquoise Manos wool, and before I knew it, I walked out with the three hanks they had on the shelf.

“What the heck do I do with three hanks?” I asked myself. The projects I had in the pipeline at that point were lace, gloves, and sweaters. Needless to say, the yarn I’d bought would be good for, um, none of those things.

But then I asked Jess for ideas, and she pointed out that it should be about enough for a minisweater (sans butt-ugly border).

Funny that. I’d actually kind of sort of been throwing around the idea of making one for awhile, but it wasn’t an absolute “must make ASAP” project. But now that I have yarn appropriate for the project, the minisweater gets added to the queue, and at a fairly high position too. And now that I think about it, I’d actually wear it fairly often – I have boatloads of tank tops with thin straps, but I can’t really wear them at work without covering up a bit. (Though my job’s ridiculously flexible about clothing, I personally draw the line at tank tops). So with a minisweater, I could cover up the tanks with something other than an open blouse.

See, I’m not just jumping on the bandwagon. I’m actually being kind of practical with my project choice.

I probably won’t start knitting it until after I finish one of my WIPs. (Though I can’t say the same about, say, the Forest Path Stole.) But it’ll get done soonish, I’m sure.

Yet another WIP

Well, I’ve definitely been posting more frequently lately. I think I’m enamored with all of my projects at the moment, so must… gush… more!

I finished my glove prototype last night. So I felt it was a good time to cast on for a new project:

What you are looking at, my friends, is the humble beginning of Lotus Blossom. Or part of it, anyway.

The yarn I’m using for this (Knitpicks’ Shimmer, which was originally for my mystery stole) is seriously seriously contrasty. The colors started to pool in a not-so-fun way, so I ended up ripping out the whole thing and starting over, alternating balls the second time around. It’s considerably less blotchy now.

So, all is good, right?

Um, no. Not so much. Now the gauge looks a bit looser than I’d like, so I’m probably going to rip it out yet again and use size 2s.

Oh, well. At least I’ve cast on for this, right? Which means that I’ve officially completed all the goals I made a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if that’s ever going to happen again…

Late August progress

Here’s the completed collar for Eris:

I like cables. I like them a lot. And I can’t help but be rather proud of this collar.

Still haven’t done additional knitting for the sweater. I probably won’t start on the yoke until after I cast on for Lotus Blossom, especially since the collar isn’t 100% dry yet.

In the meantime, I’ve kept working on the gloves. Why, oh why, did I decide to continue the striping into the fingers?

Oh yeah. I’m absolutely insane.

It’s kind of hard to take a picture of your right hand when, um, you’re right-handed. But, progress so far:

It’s loose, which is sort of odd because I’d subtracted stitches after my initial calculations. And my gauge really hasn’t changed, either. So I’m baffled. I don’t think I measured my hand wrong, but… well, maybe I did?

The index finger is especially baggy, but that partly has to do with the fact that I based the stitch count off the article’s formula, and not after my finger’s actual circumference.

Hmm.

I think I’ll just consider this glove a prototype. I should have enough yarn for a third glove. Or I could always rip this one out. But I’ll go ahead and finish this one. That way, I’ll know exactly what to modify and how.

At least it’s such a quick project, I don’t feel like I’ve wasted a whole lot of time on it. I want these to be perfect anyway, as I’m going to use them so much, so the extra effort is certainly going to be worth it.
