A tier or two

I am in love with FPS so far. Even if it kinda sorta looks like crap right now. But that’s pre-blocked lace for you.

I am taking full advantage of my ability to knit back and forth. I’m a bit slow at purling back with laceweight yarn, but between this project and Lotus Blossom, I’ll be getting lots of practice.

The wrong side rows of the Lily of the Valley chart call for p5tog, and that’s something I have trouble doing no matter which hand I’m using. During the first WS row, I did a k5tog back (remember, I didn’t turn). Didn’t work quite so well, so when I got to the second instance of the decrease within the row, I turned the work around and tried the p5tog right-handed. That was even more of a fiddly failure than the lefty k5tog. So now I just slip 4, knit 1, and pass the slipped stitches over, which works well.

I’m going to have to put this down and try to ignore it for a few days, though. I really need to finish painting my living room; it’s been in sort of a half-done state since my parents visited.

On an unrelated note, I’m currently looking for a good yarn to use for the Channel Pullover (the next sweater in the pipeline). I tend to overheat, and I’m generally fine in regular old sweatshirts down here in San Diego, so I’m thinking that a 100% wool yarn might not be the best thing for me. Not for a pullover like that, anyway. My question is, would that be a safe assumption?

Anyway, back to knitting.

At the office

Normally, during my lunch hour, I do a bit of reading.

However, I had a physical therapy appointment right before work yesterday. Which means that I had knitting in tow, because I wanted to work on a row or two while I was in the waiting room (I don’t like reading in waiting rooms, not a long enough time for me to really get into it and enjoy it.) So after I ate, I spent the remaining half hour knitting in the break room.

The guys I share an office with know that I knit, because the topic of having too many hobbies came up in conversation once. And Steve knows because he read my MySpace profile. But nobody else has any idea, because it hadn’t come up.

So Nutti comes in, looks over at me, then walks past… and then stops, takes a few steps back, and just stares.

Even though I have breasts and occasionally wear skirts, I’m generally regarded as one of the guys. And so I think it’s hard for them to imagine me as a knitter, because they view knitting as a feminine hobby. All of my other hobbies (the ones that they know about, anyway) just reinforce my “one of the boys” image. But knitting? Not so much.

I think I confused the hell out of Nutti.

And I don’t think I’m ever going to hear the end of that.

Needle sizing

My sister once asked me how I could knit with “tiny” needles. In response, I asked how she could knit with broomsticks.

Right now I’ve got four active projects. Two are on US2s, one is on US3s, the other is on US4s.

Shimmer is on 8s. I re-swatched for the back the other day, and the needles felt pretty large; I felt clumsy and awkward while handling them. I haven’t actually knit anything on that size needle for awhile. In fact, the largest size I’ve worked with recently was size 5s. (Okay, I did do a swatch on 6s, but I didn’t get very far, so it doesn’t really count.)

In general, I’m just more comfortable working with smaller needles. Some knitters get intimidated by them, but for me it’s the other way around – larger needles scare me, and I avoid them whenever possible.

I think it’s because my muscles are just very accustomed to working with smaller things. For example, I’ve been doing modular origami since I was seven or eight. I’ve probably folded thousands of 1 1/2″ and 2″ square sheets of relatively thin paper. And my fingers are probably happiest when they’re working with laceweight yarn, which isn’t much thicker than the paper I favor.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I’d started knitting with smaller needles and thinner yarn. I mean, size 10s with worsted weight felt awkward, and I thought that was just because I was still learning. But maybe, just maybe, it would have clicked faster if I’d been working with finer-gauge stuff.

Oh well. At least I’ve finally figured out what I’m most comfortable with.

Resistance is futile

You know what I said about not starting another project until I finished something?

Well, I lied.

I started the Forest Path Stole two nights ago. It doesn’t look like too much right now, because right now I’m still doing all the setup. You start off with a seed stitch border and triangles, and those are kind of a pain. Even so, it’s going fairly quickly. One reason is Norwegian purling. The other is that the yarn (Jaggerspun Zephyr) is lovely to work with, so it’s more fun than it might be with some other yarns.

I should get to the really interesting part within the next couple of days. Lace plus entrelac should be a fun experience.

And just so you know that I haven’t completely forsaken my other WIPs…

I restarted Lotus Blossom the night before starting FPS, and I’ve finished the first chart. It’s a much faster knit than I’d thought. So, that one goal about Lotus Blossom? Easiest goal ever.

I’m much happier with it now that it’s on 2s.

I’m almost finished with my left glove, but I think I might have made it a little too short now. Just an itty, bitty bit. I’ll see how I feel about it after I block it.

From the new Knitty

The new Knitty is out, so I think it’s about high time I posted a picture of this project.

Don’t mind the shadows. And okay, this picture definitely doesn’t show off the project as well as it could, but I just really like this shot for some reason. There’s a clearer picture on the pattern page (well, of half the pair, anyway).

I’m sure you’re all very tired of hearing about just how long it took me to actually finish the pair, so I’ll spare you the details, but for the record, at least I got the first sock done on time!

Folks, don’t ever ask me to test knit.

Anyway, full project stats:

Pattern: Falling Leaves.
Yarn: Patons Kroy in Forest Green. Well, that’s what Jess says the color is, anyway, and since I lost the labels during my move…
Needles: US1 Brittany Birch / Crystal Palace. Used a mixed set because I broke too many of each kind. ^_^*
Started: June 5
Finished: August 23
Notes: I did a bit less than an inch of ribbing, because it turns out that I was inept with my measuring tape one day (don’t ask), and then of course had to do the exact same number of rows on the second sock. And yes, the socks are loose on me, but I’ll wear them anyway. Because I like them, darnit!
