Sorta stashbusting

One thing I discovered when packing for last year’s move: I had way more yarn stashed than I realized. Apparently I’m really good at hiding things from myself! The box of yarn that was way in the back of the hall closet included a partial ball of Patons Stretch Sock and several random balls of Lion Brand Cotton-Ease. This year I’ve been seriously aiming to reduce my stash, so I used some of that yarn for my latest two FOs.

The Patons Stretch Sock had been used to make a phone sock out (which I never photographed and have since lost… oops). I used a little more of it to make my Kindle sleeve:

No pattern, since I winged it. The only (sort of) interesting thing about it is that I got to put my US 00 DPNs to use. (I could have used US0s, since I liked the gauge I was getting with those, but I didn’t like the pooling.) I probably should have made it slightly wider, but the whole thing took way too long as it was.

As for the Cotton Ease, I have no idea what I originally bought it for. But I think I figured out a good use for some of it, inspired by Jessica’s bringing a personal dishtowel into her office and using the same pattern as Lindsay’s handtowels:

Pattern: Baby Genius Burp Cloth by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne
Yarn: Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in Banana Cream, Pistachio, and Blueberry
Needles: US4 / 3.5mm Clover bamboo circulars

As you probably figured out from the previous paragraph, these are not actually going to be used as burp cloths. Instead, I’m bringing them to work! We only have paper towels and no air hand dryers in the office bathrooms, sadly, so I felt like something reusable was in order.

I still have partial balls of both the Stretch Sock and Cotton Ease left, so I need to figure out what to do with these, but yay for progress with stashbusting!

Lizette

I know it’s hard to tell from my lack of posts, but I swear I’ve been knitting! I even have proof. Here, take a look at one of my newest FOs:

Pattern: Lizette by Anne Ginger
Yarn: Classic Elite Allegoro in color 5616
Needles: US3 / 3.25 Knitpicks Options metal circulars and Inox grey DPNs

I love this so, so much! Even if it did turn out a bit lower cut than I intended…

(I need to get a v-neck tank top that better matches my skin tone; I’m wearing a white one in these pictures.)

I made a few modifications because my gauge was a bit different from that of the pattern. Also, I’m too short to knit this as written, anyway. I really don’t need an almost knee-length dress with the waist shaping hitting just above my hip, thank you very much.

My changes weren’t too drastic, though. I made the top shorter and did more decreases between hip and waist. I also did more increases on the front than on the back to better fit my bust. (Although, I really wish I’d done the bust increases vertically, rather than at the edges like the pattern calls for…)

I reworked the sleeve caps for shorter armholes, with the help of French Roast Design’s armscye calculator. Finally, I added about an inch of length to the sleeves. I would have liked them even longer, but I didn’t want to unravel my swatches and use that yarn because I knew I’d split it quite a bit.

Speaking of which, I really love how the yarn worked up, but I didn’t enjoy knitting with it that much. I know, I know, every single yarn out there has been called “splitty” by one knitter or another. But Classic Elite Allegoro is fairly loosely plied, and that didn’t go well with my relatively sharp needles. (I don’t have duller metal circulars in the same size, and the bamboo ones I had were too grippy for the yarn.) So, splits ahoy. I might try this yarn again with different needles, though.

Oh well. Totally worth working with the yarn to get this top, though!

Stuffed summer squash

You know summer’s closing in when I start making stuffed squash again.

Stuffing squash is hardly an exact science. Any summer squash should do; I used zucchini last time, but I’ve also used globe and pattypan before. I’ve used brown rice and I’ve used bread crumbs (but never both together), and I often include cheese, although it’s not necessary. But no matter what, there’s always some vegetables, although the specific ones can vary depending on what’s in the fridge.

I actually like stuffed summer squash best when it’s vegetarian, but as I’ve mentioned before, T tends toward meatier dishes. Continue reading

Malabrigo laceweight != love

I’ve made no secret of how little I’m enjoying Juno Regina, and that it’s all because of the yarn. I was really hoping I could just get an adequate scarf out of one skein of Malabrigo lace. Sadly, that’s not going to happen, because… well, take a look at this ball I’m working from right now.

Yep. It’s sticking together something fierce. I’m pretty sure a good half of this ball is so felted together, it’s completely unknitable. So, I guess I’ll have to wind that other skein after all.

On the plus side, it’s a little more tolerable now that I’m working from the outside of the ball. Yes, I actually turned this one inside out. (I don’t recommend doing that for less sticky yarns, by the way. The “turning inside out” part, I mean!) I still have to pause a lot to separate the working strand from the rest of the ball, but it’s not as terrible as working from the center was.

Too many WIPs, not enough time

I currently have six projects in progress. (One of which you haven’t seen yet, but it’s really just a set of dishcloths/handtowels. Boring, I know.) I used to be totally comfortable with this number of WIPs, but now? Not so much. I’m itching to start something new – probably the blue sweater you’ve seen swatches for – but I’m going to make myself finish at least two things first.

Juno Regina has turned into my work project, and I’m kind of hating it, not gonna lie. I’m so tired of dealing with the Malabrigo lace that I’m only going to use the one skein I’ve wound. If I only get a scarf out of it instead of a stole, then so be it. My Lune Shawl’s hibernating, not because I’m bored with it, but because I want to finish Juno Regina (my older shawl/scarf project) first. And I’m really not feeling Gothic Spire right now, so it’s going incredibly slowly.

The only project I’m really enjoying, and therefore the one I’m likely to finish next, is Lizette.

The front is knit in two pieces, which will be joined by i-cord at the end. I finished the medallion chart yesterday, so I’ll probably finish the upper front some time this weekend. From there, it’s just the sleeves and finishing left.

I’ll probably finish either the Kindle sleeve or the dishcloth set over the next couple of weeks, and then it’s on to something new! So exciting!
