Backing it up

I just finished the nth sleeve for Shimmer (pictures to come once I’ve got my camera batteries charged), so now I have to figure out what the heck I’m going to do about the back.

The back measurement is 17″ for the smallest size. That might actually be a little bit too big for me. Now I do want some ease, of course, but I don’t know if I want quite that much ease. My tape measure’s disappeared again so I can’t remeasure right now, but given what I know about my body’s proportions and how I like my garments fitted, I’m fairly sure I’m going to want this about an inch narrower across the back. I’ll have to see how the pattern stretches before I make the final decision, though.

I guess I’m only medium-framed relative to my height. :-P I mean, I haven’t been under 100 pounds since before puberty; I’d hardly call myself skinny. But I keep forgetting that a woman of average height with my upper body width and circumference would be closer to a small. It only seems like I’m a bit wider because I’m shorter. I also have a wacked-out perception of clothing sizes, because of the whole juniors/petite/standard discrepancies.

Whew, that was sort of rambly…

The good thing about this wonkiness is that I’m getting to be a lot more familiar with my actual size. It’s one thing to know that I have a proportionally short torso, but another to know what my torso length actually is, you know?

More knitting in public

I’ve been quite the social knitter lately. I blame Jess.

Not that that’s a bad thing.

We went to Claire de Lune last night. I saw some familiar faces and some new ones, and despite my brain breaking after certain remarks, I had a good time. Unfortunately I didn’t catch everyone’s names, but in a very rare moment, I realized that I actually remembered everyone I’d met before. (I’m good with faces, terrible with names.)

So if I met you last night, say hi!

I made some progress on my sleeve for Shimmer. Technically it’s the third sleeve I’ve knit for this project, but it’s a re-knit of the first sleeve and I only have one complete sleeve, so I have no idea what to number it. :-P Whatever. I think I’ll watch a film and get a couple of more inches into the sleeve tonight.

I’m going to need to swatch and do more math-y things before I work on the back, though. Not only does the pattern fail to mention a gauge for that section, I also have to do a bit of tweaking for size, seeing as I have a short torso but a medium frame.

As far as blog news goes, the URL for this site changed a bit after I changed the LJ settings, but that probably won’t affect anyone because who the heck would bookmark this thing? :-P

I’ll be able to repost and backdate older entries now, instead of just having links to my other journal. So I’ll probably get around to that sometime this weekend. It’ll be nice to consolidate all the knitting content.

Yet another SD knitter

Because I really should update this more often…

I seriously need more time in the day. Between reading and singing/beatboxing and watching DVDs, it’s kind of amazing that I get any knitting done at all these days. I have too many hobbies, I guess.

Anyway, I’ve found that social activities ensure knitting time. I’ve hung out with for the past two Wednesdays and gotten some inches of Shimmer in (though I did have to rip back a bit last Wednesday). CAB screenings are good times to knit, too.

Today Jess and I went over to the Whistlestop for yet another knitting session. It was pretty fun, even if my mild hangover did make my shy streak kick in a bit… While hanging out, I finished a sleeve for Shimmer, and I also cast on for one of socks I’m test knitting for Jess.

Pictures to come soonish.

I’m going to try to be good about keeping up with this journal again (being in the SD Knit Blogs ring is kind of motivating as far as that’s concerned), but then again I’ve been slacking off with my regular journal too. Oh well. I think I’m just sick of the computer right now, considering my job and all.

Coloring spree

This post is, oh, about a month overdue. But better late than never, right? :-P

So, I got some Fisherman’s Wool. Figured this way I’d have plenty of yarn to experiment with, and get the hang of this thing before trying it with better yarns. And some Wilton icing dyes.

Yarn soup. :-P Presoaking in water and some vinegar.

I mixed the icing dyes with water and a bit of table salt. I did this in small paper cups before pouring them into small squirt bottles. (Yeah, I took this picture near the end of my dyeing spree. :-P) I think I might use a slightly higher proportion of water the next time I try this.

I had teal, royal blue, and violet dyes. I did all three of those colors, then a teal/royal blue and a violet/royal blue mix.

My first hank, pre-nuking. I squirted the dye onto the yarn and worked it through with my fingers.

I used the microwave for this – plastic-wrapped the yarn, nuked it for two minutes, let it sit for two minutes, repeated a couple of times. Here it’s just past its final cycle.

Rinsing in cold water…

After dyeing several hanks, my vinyl gloves turned a fairly bright pink. Interesting.

Hanging to dry in my bathroom. Yes, they’re on hangers. Easier to move them that way, means I didn’t have take over the whole bathroom for too long. (Once they dried enough, I hung them off one of the rails of my loft bed, throwing a couple of ratty towels down to absorb anything that dripped.)

Finished product! Pretty colors, no? Though the teal/green doesn’t photograph so well; it’s much lovelier in person.

Here’s a sample to see how it will knit up.

Things I noticed: I missed a couple of spots here and there, but at least the dye ran enough to get some color in there. Not much – color’s very pale in those spots – but just enough to make sure it’s not completely natural at least. There’s a bit too much red in the violet for my tastes, and the blue’s a bit dark in places, even breaking down to purple-ish hue. It’s a nice color, just darker than I wanted.

Also, I think the water may have been a bit too cold while I was rinsing the yarn, because the yarn was a bit… well, felted, I guess. It’s a bit rough now, more so than before, and strands were slightly stuck together too. Oops. Something to keep in mind for next time, at least.

I just decided to go ahead and dye all that yarn, that way I could make one big project and then never deal with Fisherman’s Wool again. I’m not totally sure what I’m going to make with it yet, though…

As far as new knitting news goes, I hung out with Jess last night, and after getting sushi (mmm, sushi…), I worked on the second sleeve for Shimmer. I’m about halfway through it now. I might actually re-do the first one because I messed up while adjusting the pattern for my short little arms, but no big deal.

Also, Jess gave me some sock yarn, and lent me a set of her size 1 DPNs. She’s planning on submitting a pattern to Knitty, and I basically get to be the guinea pig in testing out her instructions. :-P Should be fun.

I should just keep working on my stash…

Shimmer and lace

I finished a sleeve for Shimmer. Seriously, if I didn’t know any better, I’d honestly think it was supposed to be a 3/4 sleeve… it looks so short! I’d take a picture, but it’s kind of awkward taking a picture of your own arm, and my tripod’s kind of wonky at the moment (need to fix it).

I reached the end of the first ball just a few rows before I finished the sleeve, and I decided to try the Russian join this time around. It works great, but the join’s a lot more noticeable than a spit-splice join would be. I’m not sure how much blocking would fix that (part of the issue is just that stitches are uneven in that spot). Whatever it is, I’m thinking I’m definitely going to just splice for the rest of the joins.

I also found the pattern for my black lace scarf, though I haven’t picked up the needles again yet.

I’ve been too tired to knit much for the past couple of days… I’m readjusting my internal clock to account for my new work hours, so at the moment I pretty much want to collapse once I’m done for the day. And since I went out for a run both yesterday and today after work, you can just imagine how little energy I had left for knitting afterward. Once I get used to it I’ll be knitting more on weeknights, though. And in the meantime, there’s always the weekend!

I still need to post the pictures for my yarn-dyeing experiment; I’ll probably get around to that by this weekend.
