August 2007 goals

I was cameraless for a good portion of July, hence the lack of blog updates. I do have my camera back from the repair shop now, though, so I’ll be posting again tomorrow or Friday with a project update.

In the meantime, progress on the July goals:

  1. Knit at least eight repeats of the Mountain Stream Scarf – Not done; I’m a couple of repeats short.
  2. Knit outside of Thursday knit nights – Done. Though I actually didn’t go to Thursday knitting at all in July. Not that anyone else did either, though…
  3. Work on something other than Mountain Stream Scarf (preferably Eris, but the socks will do) – Done. If redrafting the Fairways toe pattern counts as progress, that is.

August’s goals:

  1. Work on the Mountain Stream Scarf
  2. Finish at least one sock
  3. Work on Eris

Boring, I know, but I’m still easing myself back into knitting and these goals should help.

July 2007 goals

I really haven’t been knitting much – I break out the Mountain Stream Scarf at weekly knit nights, but that’s about it. Which explains the lack of blog updates. But!

I didn’t set any June goals, so here’s how I did for May’s:

  1. Finish one sock – Not done.
  2. Knit at least 1 inch for Eris – Done!
  3. Knit at least three repeats of the Mountain Stream Scarf – Done!

This month’s (kind of belated) goals are simple:

  1. Knit at least eight repeats of the Mountain Stream Scarf
  2. Knit outside of Thursday knit nights
  3. Work on something other than Mountain Stream Scarf (preferably Eris, but the socks will do)

Back to the quest

I, um, kind of forgot about this blog. Not that I’d been reading much – I’ve said this before and I’m sure I’ll say it again, but I have way too many hobbies and I’ve never quite figured out how to balance them all out.

But the bookwormy me is back now…

I still haven’t finished Dos Passos’s The Big Money. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that this probably isn’t going to happen until December, mostly because it’s just really slow going. Oh well, though. I finished re-reading The Chronicles of Narnia earlier this year, and I’m currently going back through the Harry Potter series. (Only the first four are on the BBC top 100 list, but the last book’s coming out in a couple of weeks, so of course I’m also going to read Order of the Phoenix and Half-blood Prince…)

Fairly recently, I also finished the following:

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Mark Twain: This tries be too many things at once. One of the main themes is satirical, a commentary on the over-romantization of chivalry and the Middle Ages. However, I kind of wished that the main character was real, just so I could meet him and punch him in the face. Hank’s kind of an uncompromising jerk, and this undermines Twain’s satire in places. Oh well, it had its amusing moments. I definitely don’t love it, but I don’t hate it, either.

Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte: I found this surprisingly enjoyable, considering how prominent the love theme was and all. (Why, no, I don’t really care for romance… why do you ask?) It’s probably because I actually really like Jane. There are some remarkable concidences and some overly dramatic moments, and parts of it are a bit tedious. But though I didn’t always enjoy Bronte’s style, I do like the overall story and the way she brings the main characters to life. It’s also nice to read about what life was like in that place and at that time – there’s some great description in there.

Atonement, Ian McEwan: The overall plot and themes are interesting, the writing is generally vivid and otherwise well-done, and the structure is well-suited to the story. The first part moves really slowly, but I flew through the book once I got past that. The second part is especially compelling, but I couldn’t put the book down during the third part, either. And the latter really says something for McEwan’s writing, I think, because the third part focuses on Briony and I really dislike her. Though at least there’s a reason why she’s written the way she is…

That’s that for the finished works. I still have some cleanup to do on the site itself, but that should be done by the end of the day, at least.

Yes, I’m a slacker

So I said I would post a picture of my newest lace WIP, and look, I’m actually doing it! (More than a few weeks late, admittedly. But better late than never, right?) Here goes:

This is a Mountain Stream Scarf, using the yarn leftover from the Tina Shawl. The pictures I took last week didn’t turn out so well, so this picture is from early April. But the scarf doesn’t look much different now – it’s just several repeats longer.

Surprisingly, I’m still not completely bored with it. I think part of it is because for some reason, I find the edging slightly non-intuitive. Also, believe it or not, but this is my very first garter-stitch-based project. So I’m not really used to reading my knitting in this sort of ground and it occasionally confuses me. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll get used to it at some point.

May 2007 goals

If anyone out there is still reading, sorry for the lack of updates. Life’s been kind of nuts lately. And despite what I said about having more time to knit… I haven’t really been knitting. Most of that extra time went into rekindling old hobbies. I also had a lot of conflicts with knit-togethers this month. Both of those things mean that last month’s goal progress was practically nonexistent.

  1. Finish Falling Leaves v2 – Not done.
  2. Finish one Fairways sock and make some progress on the other – Not done.
  3. Knit at least 1 1/2 inches for Eris – Not done.
  4. Knit at least three repeats of the Mountain Stream Scarf – Done! (Barely.)
  5. Start a new pair of fingerless mitts, but only after finishing a Fairways sock. – Not done.

My year goal progress is equally sad, but I’m not any worse off than I was last month (no stash acquisitions, and I did make it to a friend’s general crafting shindig at the very end of April).

In May I should be able to start going to regular knit-togethers again, which means I should be getting at least a little more knitting in. But I’ll just ease myself back into it. This month’s goals:

  1. Finish one sock
  2. Knit at least 1 inch for Eris
  3. Knit at least three repeats of the Mountain Stream Scarf

Speaking of the Mountain Stream Scarf, I still need to post about it. If today was any indication, May gray could make it impossible for me to take a new, decently-lit shot. But I’ve got a slightly older photo that I never got around to uploading, and I may just post that one instead. We’ll see. Either way, look for another post this week!
